Pandemic forced us to isolate ourselves from other people and communities. Once the world opens up slowly, we are more eager than ever to feel, taste and experience in real life - to really use all of our senses once again.
AR poses a positive way of combining the physical and virtual worlds, providing more stimulation for the senses. At the same time, technology brings storytelling and data in the center of the customer experience. Art productions have used technologies to create hybrid experiences, but now we can bring the same elements for smaller audiences. For example, in a restaurant setting technology and art combined with the virtual world redetermines the meaning of soul food.
Metaverse as a fourth place
As metaverses gain popularity, brands face growing demand to include virtual world manifestations to the brand experience. And there is a lot to gain. For example Fortnite has increased its popularity during pandemic, reaching a monthly audience of over 350 million players. The opportunities of novel technologies are limitless across different industries and businesses are investing heavily. According to Statista, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) market size worldwide in 2021 is 30,7 billion USD and is expected to grow to 269 billion by 2024.
Hidden stories created with AR technology enable us to experience everyday situations with new layers. It is speculated that based on how we interact today, in the future verbal communication could in some cases be replaced with more intuitive ways of interaction. AR enhanced experiences present a case of emotive communication, boosting the real life experience with an extra layer, oftentimes non-verbally. The role of the technology is to boost the experience and nourish senses - AR has already been introduced to our plates.
